NEW INGREDIENTS FROM SUPERFOODS: CHIA PROTEIN AND GLUCOMORINGIN FROM MORINGA

The Superfoods Chia and Moringa are well known in the food and supplement industry and have many health benefits. Due to the product properties there are some limitations of use for both products. Taiyo has now used Chia and Moringa and processed them in a way to create NEW raw materials for the food and supplement industry with different properties. Taiyo created a new Chia Protein that is a non-allergenic, very creamy and nutty tasting protein source that can be used in powder products as well as in dairy free drinks. Taiyo also created a new Moringa extract high in Glucomoringin, the main glycosinolate in Moringa. This NEW Moringa extract is tasteless, colourless, clearly water soluble and stable in water even under acidic conditions. The extract can be used for beverages and all kinds of dietary supplements. Two clinical studies have shown that this extract enhances physical performance in animals and decreases fatigue and back pain in humans.

Knee osteoarthritis is the one with the highest prevalence among different types of ostoearthritis. A WHO report states that this disease is close to becoming the fourth cause of disability in women and the eighth in men. According to the Spanish Society of Rheumatology, more than 7 million people over the age of 20 have osteoarthritis of the knee, hand or spine. This prevalence supposes an expense of 4,800 million euros for the administration each year, 0.5% of the Spanish GDP. Most supplements and drugs to counteract pain in joints affected by osteoarthritis are composed of a combination of hilaluronic acid, glucosamine and chondroitin. The egg shell membrane is composed mainly of fibrous collagen proteins and also it contains glycosaminiglycans such as chondroitin sulfate and dermatan sulfate and hexosamines such as glucosamine. In addition, hyaluronic acid has been shown to be present in significant amounts. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of a food supplement extracted from the internal membrane of the egg shell on joint pain in individuals diagnosed with osteoarthritis, after having consumed it for a period of 8 weeks.

Good nutrition is a powerful tool to maintain optimal health and even to enhance youthful-appearing skin. Healthy skin is a representation of overall health and can be influenced by the consumption of oral substances, including vitamins and antioxidants. This anti-aging approach “inside-out” emerged a few years ago, emphasizing that oral food supplements and topical agents may be synergistically combined to enhance efficacy. Antioxidants are potent chemicals that make up the first line of defense that the body uses to inactivate free radicals and prevent them from causing a variety of chronic diseases and severe illnesses. However, free radicals may outnumber the antioxidants available in the body. To maintain a healthy equilibrium, antioxidants must come from external sources. Further, new findings indicate other beneficial properties: prebiotic, antidiabetic, antioxidant, renoprotective and anti-aging. All this new knowledge has triggered the development of chitosan-based products at Primex Iceland.

COLLAGEN PEPTIDES FOR SKIN BEAUTY AND HAIR HEALTH: A TREND THAT HAS COME TO STAY (SPEECH IN SPANISH)

Collagen is naturally present in the body and made up of a unique combination of amino acids, some of which form very stable peptide bonds with each other. Those bonds are resistant to breakdown by the digestive system. Therefore, when orally taking collagen peptides, small bioactive peptides, in addition to free amino acids, can cross from the intestine into the bloodstream. These peptides can reach connective tissues in an intact form.
Studies with radioactively labelled collagen-derived peptides show that soon after absorption they enter into target tissues, such as bone, cartilage, muscle and skin. In skin they could be detected until 14 days after administration.
